A new year is an ideal time to take a good hard look in the mirror and decide whether we are happy with the person looking back at us. Reevaluate if we are dressing as we desire or need a new approach. Is it a case of getting out of a style rut or a case of emergency surgery?

Dressing and looking better is a skill that any man can learn. If mastered, it can improve one's confidence whilst portraying a more polished exterior. Being our best self doesn't stop at our clothing. Small changes in grooming habits, purchasing choices and taking better care of what we already have will impact how presentable we appear.

Read our tips on how men can upgrade their style over the next twelve months.

1. Cover The Basics

The timeless staples in any wardrobe are the core foundational pieces that help you build classic outfits. Think pristine white tees, slim-fit jeans or a navy two-button blazer. They work well individually within numerous looks but can also be matched together. The result is a multi-functional wardrobe tailored towards modern life.

Take jeans, for example. Worn as part of a casual ensemble, jeans and a grey loopback cotton sweatshirt might be sufficient for some. But why not take it further and style your jeans with an unstructured blazer or slim-fitting roll neck for something more formal?

Importantly, these foundational pieces aren't trend-led. That means they aren't out of favour 12 months later and need replacing. As such, men need to focus on the quality of the fabric to ensure they last as long as possible. Bypass cheap synthetic materials, as these will likely lose their shape or colour over time. And you'll be back to square one.

Below are just some of our favourite foundation pieces:

2. Clear Out Your Wardrobe

Having a wardrobe full of appropriate, usable pieces is essential for men. Often when we have too much stuff, we can fail to see our best pieces and what we never wear anymore.

Our best advice is to remove everything and lay it on the floor. This is the only way you will get a true assessment of what you own. From here, guys should start creating piles of clothing categories you still want to wear. It would help if you were tough. Waiting for that occasion to wear a particular item might never come. Get rid and start fresh.

A cathartic process, clearing out like this, can help destress and make you some money. Why not sell your unwanted clothing on a marketplace like eBay or Vinted

Be sure to take note of any pieces that may have been cast aside because they need repairing or specialist cleaning. 2023 is the year to either renew or remove. We can all be guilty of putting off hand-washing knitwear items or re-soling formal shoes. Let's take that action.

Post-clear out; your wardrobe will now be full of clothing and accessories you can wear regularly. The result makes it easier to efficiently find and pair pieces together to create better outfit choices.

3. Invest In Key Pieces

With a clearer, more manageable wardrobe, it's time to take stock of what you have and need. But before you rush to the high street to fill that shopping void, assess what you truly want out of each piece on your list.

When we take note of a well-dressed individual, we revere the overall polished look. Though, when we break it down, the outfit can be underpinned by some key statement pieces holding it together. How a coat cinches the waist or the cut of formal trousers can transform the final outcome. A statement doesn't always have to be bold and bright.

Take the time to research how different fabrics and styles create varied silhouettes. The fabric (and care thereof), in particular, may be why you spend a little more. Better quality typically comes with a higher price tag. Although spread across the lifetime of that item, it can be much more cost-effective.

As a default, outerwear and footwear will be more of our money spent, aside from, say, a suit. But, considering how much you wear these pieces, shouldn't we spend more, if we will look better?

4. Pay Attention To Fit

Men should always pay close attention to the fit of their clothing to look their best. An ill-fitting shirt, pair of trousers or jacket can easily ruin the entire outfit and make the wearer look sloppy.

As a basic rule, we need our measurements before we go shopping. Not your size from two years ago, right now. Our bodies fluctuate in size and weight. Just take my Christmas break as a good standard for this.

Accurate measurements ensure we can save time by not sending clothing back. No returns make us happier and reduce that purchase's carbon footprint.

Once you have your size down, you are in a good position to pick clothes that flatter your figure. If you are tall, below average or of a fuller figure, there will always be tricks to deceive the eye and create a more presentable look. Learn these, and apply them to your current wardrobe and future purchases.

It is also worth noting that your size may differ from brand to brand. Unfortunately, this results from brands using varied templates when creating products. Head in-store and try on as much as possible. This way, you'll know what brands work best for your shape.

Remember, as a final thought on this matter. Menswear tends to cater for the body average. If you want something more specific, it might be worth introducing the help of a tailor to get the desired look.

5. Make Sustainable Choices

We cannot ignore the effect consumerism has on the planet. Fashion generally uses a ton of resources to produce products in mass quantities. Utilising synthetic fabrics and operating unethically is not something we stylish men should be associated with.

In this regard, we don't mean suddenly hand-making your clothing out of hemp and living off-grid. There are plenty of ways guys can minimise their harm to the planet through making sustainable choices. The first is to look into brands offering sustainable alternatives to mass-market pieces. Companies like Patagonia, Asket, and Veja use ethically sourced materials while paying their workers the correct wages. These brands make it easy for men to pick quality products knowing they are minimising their negative impact on the environment.

However, we can always do more.

Opting for a British manufacturing brand will reduce the carbon footprint of your purchase. While trying to repair loved items before throwing them in the bin can minimise landfill.

To the above, we should always take note of quality over quantity. Fashions come and go, but great style is permanent. Picking timeless pieces as the foundation of our wardrobes will ensure we have clothing that won't go in and out of style. Cared for correctly, they will be dependable year after year.

So, next time you shop for footwear, those Northampton-made formal shoes might be one of the best investments for your wardrobe and the planet.

6. Get A Complimenting Haircut

With clothing, our body shapes should drive how we wear most of our clothes. The same could be said for our haircuts. The style and length of our locks ought to be driven by our face shapes.

It can be easy to walk into a barber shop and request a style that imitates your peers or even a celebrity. Though, this might not always be the most flattering. Build up a relationship with your barber on what would look best. They are the experts. Trust them.

Generally, those with long faces shouldn't elongate further by adding height or going too short on the sides. Rounder faces need shorter sides and on top. While there will be nuances, guys can use this as a guideline.

A dodgy barnet or unkempt facial hair can do the same for a look as a badly fitting suit. We want to create a harmonious and presentable facade, including hair and beards. So, pay attention to this and stick to classic cuts that will make you look your dapper best.

7. Decide On A Scent

In caveman terms, the smell is crucial to the attractiveness of men—an invisible weapon in the arsenal of a man's style. Only noticed in close proximity, a great aftershave can lift someone's perception of the wearer.

The smell is a powerful sense, which means a nice fragrance will leave a lasting impression on those you meet. It is also great at boosting the confidence of the wearer. But yet, the majority of men don't wear it.

Not wearing a scent could be due to a lack of understanding around aftershaves and the higher price of entry some brands charge. Combine this with walking any department store's intimidating and "salesy" perfume floor. It is no surprise some men are put off. Though, most mass-produced fragrances from brands like Burberry or Armani are pretty palpable. They are created for a wider market and are not overpowering or offensive for most guys. So, should you want to dip your toe in, you will quickly find a scent you like.

Discovering a more personal scent can be uplifting for the dedicated among you. A perfumer can create a unique fragrance from scratch based on your choice of raw materials. This process can make a nice birthday or even a wedding gift for a couple to identify complimenting scents.

8. Develop A Grooming Regime

No matter your age, it is imperative to have a grooming regime to look your best. Taking care of your skin can help prevent numerous conditions like dull skin, spots and dark circles under the eyes. As men age, we become more aware of skin issues as skin elasticity reduces and fine lines appear. But thankfully, there is always time to make a difference.

Taking action is key, as we can't undo the damage that has already happened. However, we can slow down the ageing process and improve any small issues with some simple steps.

Wash Daily

A deep wash with a cleanser can remove impurities and build-up. Oil and dirt on the skin will lead to breakouts and a shiny complexion. Cleansing the skin is the foundation of your regime, as it creates a blank canvas for other elements to be absorbed by the skin.

Exfoliate Regularly

Where cleansing can admirably wash the face, exfoliating will dig out anything clogging the pores. After using an exfoliator, your skin will become instantly fresher.

This process only needs to be done twice a week post-cleanse. That will be enough to keep on top of any clogged pores and keep your skin looking primed.

Rehydrate With Moisturiser

The skin's ability to hold onto moisture will decline over time. Daily, we should help our bodies by using a moisturiser on clean, dry skin.

A moisturiser can be particularly beneficial for those men with dry patches or skin conditions like rosacea. If you don't have these issues, a moisturiser in the morning and evening can restore nutrients and moisture lost during the day or night.

Use Suncream

We tend to pigeonhole damage to the skin as only sunburn. But harmful UV rays cause premature ageing by weakening collagen, speeding up the effects of growing old that are already inevitable.

Sun cream can be worn daily, at all times of the year. Ludicrous as it might sound, the sun doesn't disappear after summer. The sun's rays can still be harmful without being as strong as in warm months, so seek a moisturiser that includes sun protection—that way, you will get that safeguard against the rays.

9. Ditch The Sweats

Athleisure is seemingly in your face at every turn; it doesn't mean you have to succumb to it. We agree with pushing the boundaries of sartorial rules and mixing mediums, but we draw the line at leaving the house in sweatpants.

"Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants." - Karl Lagerfeld

This quote might be a little extreme from Mr Lagerfeld. However, the simplicity of chucking on a pair of sweatpants does lean towards the lack of a measured approach to the outfit.

Working from home requires a certain level of comfort, and sweatpants can be a welcome choice when there are no Zoom calls. How about we swap them for something more polished before leaving the house in 2023?

10. Mix Up Your Tailoring

Post-pandemic, men have looked at their outfits and particularly formal choices in a new light. You might only be heading to the office once or twice a week, so getting less wear from your suits. Even in the corporate space, attitudes toward how men should dress have shifted. But that does not mean we must eliminate our "whistle and flute".

By experimenting with how we wear our formal items, we can breathe new life into them—introducing separates, for example, or swapping formal elements like a shirt for something more casual like a polo shirt. These small tweaks collectively can add to a fresh new approach to formal dressing.

Are you looking to add something extra to your menswear look? One envious glance at our stylish Italian counterparts could be the answer. 'Spezzato' or 'broken suit' in English is the sartorial flair of pairing different formal pieces together. We typically refer to this as 'suit separates. It sounds simple but is fraught with menswear faux pas'. Colour, fabric, not to mention fit can all play a part in getting this wrong.

This guide will dive into how men can mix suit separates for any occasion - from formal events to everyday office attire - so follow along. Once mastered, it will deliver infinite wardrobe options as you mix individual formal components with aplomb.

What Are Suit Separates?

In essence, separates are different pieces of formal menswear combined to produce a new outfit iteration. Typically this is a two-piece version that includes a jacket and trousers but also a three-piece that consists of a jacket, trousers and vest or waistcoat.

The beauty of suit separates is that they offer the same classic fit and styling of a traditional suit but with the added versatility to mix and match pieces from different aesthetics; colour, fabric or texture. This flexibility allows men to create a look that is unique to them.

Notably, each piece can be tailored to fit you perfectly – whether you're looking for something more relaxed or want to keep it sharp with a tapered silhouette. The choices it creates will be sure to fit any dress code needed.

When Is The Best Time To Wear Suit Separates?

Stepping out of the warm embrace of your everyday suit can be daunting. After all, many occasions and events may warrant donning formal attire, and the suit is the founding father. But, as long as the dress code is within the scope of formal (aside from black tie), there is always room to experiment with separates. Weddings, date nights, or corporate lunches can all be tackled head-on. Remember, the key to mastering this sartorial technique is embracing its flexibility. Lean into how versatile you can make it. Playing with colours, fabrics, and fits can create a more polished or casual outcome.

Do's & Don'ts With Mixing Suit Pieces

One of the major barriers when wearing separate suit jackets and trousers is finding a pairing that appears good together. In isolation, your suit choices look great, but mixed, they create questions around texture and colour. Tones that are too similar can lead to men failing to achieve the clear separation we need to nail the broken suit look.

Thankfully, there are some sartorial rules men can follow to create a well-put-together ensemble.

Colour Creates The Contrast

Focusing on colour is a great starting point when planning an outfit from separate pieces. Colour is the first thing people will see and can sometimes be the hardest element to get right. The key is to develop contrast.

Colour hues that are too similar can look like you picked the wrong trousers to wear with your jacket. Rather than purposefully choosing different formal pieces. A complementing but contrasting colour pick will remove that confusion.

A top tip is introducing a colour that can be a unifier between your top and bottom. For example, navy trousers blend nicely with a check jacket if the jacket has navy incorporated in it. Alternatively, an accessory like a navy tie can do the same trick.

If in doubt, stick to some failsafe colour combinations, which we highlight later.

Nail How The Suit Pieces Fit

We go on about it all the time. Knowing how to get your clothes to fit you correctly means you are halfway to looking your best, regardless of brand, cloth, colour etc. If it doesn't fit right, it will never look great.

Crucially, when wearing suit separates, the fit can be an additional element to show uniformity. A tailored jacket with loose-fit trousers will be too much of a juxtaposition for most men. Try and ensure that the silhouette is the same on both halves.

Those that want an overall tailored outcome might benefit from getting some alterations. At least this way, you can create harmony without relying on two different brands to have executed their formal items similarly.

Our following rule will help with getting this right.

Don't Go Too Formal

By this rule, we mean that overly formal suits will be more challenging to pair with other trousers. Suit jackets in a structured fit with padded shoulders will look their best when worn with matching trousers.

Men need to look for jackets with a more relaxed composition. That entails a natural shoulder, not fully lined. An excellent choice is a two-button style. Then once we have the foundation of the colour and fit in place, guys can start to play with texture.

Add Some Texture

In this instance, we focus on how our fabric choices can elevate our separate look. Depending on the occasion and even time of year, fabric choice can play a part in hitting the sweet spot of the broken suit.

Mixing summer and winter fabrics is a recipe for sartorial disaster. Though, if we keep within these confounds, linen can add texture in summer, like wool in winter. Similar weights are a good barometer as to whether the materials will work with one another.

Remember to tick off the previous points, and only then should you start experimenting with texture. Try cotton trousers, for example, with a different colour linen jacket for a smart casual wedding dress code. We can switch the cotton to wool and linen to moleskin in colder months. The colours can be the same, but the change of fabrics immediately mixes up the outfit.

Get it right, and the fabrics can create an additional layer of interest in unison with colour, uplifting you to menswear celestial status.

Failsafe Blazer & Trouser Combos

In our current climate, most men might not want to consider tailoring. Its formalities can often be at odds with the direction menswear has taken over the past few years, with everyone and his mother doing athleisure. Soft tailoring is an excellent middle road, and we can include suit separates in this conversation.

Unstructured jackets are the tailoring world's answer to athleisure. With more room in the body and arms, you immediately feel a greater sense of comfort. By partnering with the right formal trousers, men can still be smart. You just need to know what works.

Below are some of our favourite blazers and trouser combinations. So, whether you opt for soft tailoring or a more formal choice, these colour partners can be the best foundation for your outfit picks.

Grey Blazer & Beige Trousers

Hackett / Suit Supply

Beige, although best avoided in winter, is a very adaptive colour for summer. The muted palette is a great backdrop to various colours and textures. If you want to introduce a more head-turning jacket, keep the rest of the look in a similar tone. Like in the left-hand photo, light blue allows the jacket to come to the fore. Alternatively, you can see that in the right-hand photo, beige can absorb deeper earthier tones layered on top of another foundational colour like white. Perfect to lead into transitional seasons.

Navy Blazer & Beige Trousers

Reiss / Kingsman

A navy suit is a menswear essential. This versatile number should be in every man's wardrobe, and for a good reason. When we use the jacket on its own, there are numerous opportunities.

One we rely on a lot is the blue and beige combination. Full of preppy vibes, it looks great over a simple white t-shirt or a more formal shirt. Accesories-wise, a striped tie, colourful pocket square, and even a white Panama hat wouldn't go a miss here.

Grey Blazer & Grey Trousers

Suit Supply / Thom Sweeney

If you hadn't read the rest of the article, you might be forgiven for thinking that this menswear had made a typing error. Though, to reference previous rules on wearing suit separates, texture and colour play a part. We can opt for grey on top and bottom if there is enough contrast in colour. The texture is a key weapon in achieving this.

Both photos picked have a clear difference in the depth of colour, which creates that imaginary line between the top and bottom half. Men must keep the rest of the look paired back and minimal to execute it, like with black shoes as a footwear choice. They do a fantastic job grounding everything.

Navy Blazer & Grey Trousers

Canali / Pini Parma

Many men might feel that wearing beige or white on their bottom half is a little too daring. This is where grey can come into play. The masculine combination of navy and grey can be elevated with earthy-toned knitwear, while men can use their tie or pocket square to add a dash of individuality.

Choose from black or dark brown loafers to complete this contemporary look. Just remember, too light, and your shoes will draw the eye down and appear out of place. We want the grey and blue to be the focus here.

The humble men's fleece jacket has been gaining popularity over the past few years. Guys have changed their opinion on these historically unfashionable outdoorsy items in the search for warming winter clothing that is both practical and stylish. Possibly a hangover from our enforced work-from-home spell during COVID, at its heart is this cosy, soft choice.

To help us pick, our high street faves and their designer counterparts have taken to elevate the fleece jacket. Now you'll find options in a mix of patterns and colours, adorned with multiple zips and patch pockets. For the traditionalist, look no further than the granddaddy of outdoor fleece in Patagonia or its more modern sustainable alternative in Pangaia. We feature both alongside more familiar (and unfamiliar) fashion favourites to showcase the range on offer for men.

Remember that material weight is the key to picking a fleece that skillfully suits your needs. Heavier material is best for outerwear, while lighter fabrics are ideal for layering. However, we must make educated decisions to hit the sweet spot between cold-weather cosiness without losing style points. Let's face it, no one under 50 wants to look like they are heading to the Peak District for the weekend. So no matter whether you need a fleece for the slopes or daily errands, stay stylishly comfortable in one of the picks below.

Pangaia Wool Men's Fleece Jacket

3. Pangaia Wool Men's Fleece Jacket

Pangaia is known for its sustainable products in a range rainbow of colourways. But, this time, we have gone for a more muted Wool Fleece Jacket. What it lacks in colour, it makes up for in pillow-like softness. With a luxurious feel and high-end look, it is fast becoming our go-to layering piece this winter. Coming at a price tag for the more dedicated fashion followers, this fleece is an investment that will see you through many a cold season.

Patagonia Retro Pile Fleece Jacket

We would style this under an overcoat with slim-fit jeans for a relaxed, rugged feel when the temperature goes south quickly.

Folk Puzzle Zip Fleece

6. Folk Puzzle Zip Fleece

The Billie Fleece Jacket is a fine example. An ideal fleece jacket made not only from soft teddy fabric but also has enough details and design interest to make you want to wear it daily.

KAPITAL Sashiko Boa Reversible Printed Fleece

8. KAPITAL Sashiko Boa Reversible Printed Fleece

Now, did someone say head-turning fleece jacket? This reversible printed option from Kapital is daring enough without becoming too gaudy. The fact it is reversible immediately doubles your wearing potential, and both sides have their positive notes—one a cosy envelope of softness, the other featuring a water-resistant fabric. So, no matter what mother nature throws at you, this fleece jacket has the answer.

MR P. Shearling Fleece Jacket

15. Levi's Sherpa Hoodie

Denim favourites, Levi's, do more than just jeans. Their additional product categories transcend menswear trends, though we like that they have a vintage twist a lot of the time. This men's fleece jacket gives us 70s California vibes and would look great partnered with a pair of Levi's stalwart 501s.

As the days get colder and winter is upon us, it can be challenging for guys to stay warm while still looking stylish. Our hibernating senses kick in, and we add layer after layer to protect us against the chill. But with the right jacket, you can keep your look on-trend without sacrificing warmth.

The key is knowing what and how to invest your money. We are prominent purveyors of style that can transcend seasons somewhat, offering us more bang for our buck. A winter coat is a fine example. Should we desire a piece with the best warming and water-repellent properties, we will likely need to invest a little wonga!

This article will explore some of the best winter jackets for men that combine style and function—from timeless overcoats to modern puffers. Whether you're looking for a classic coat or something more daring, plenty of options are available to keep you both warm and fashionable in cold weather. This way, you will know that any purchase is money well spent.

1. Parka Jacket

Move your polar adventurer spirit into top gear and get your hands on a heavyweight parka. Famed by the world's foremost explorers of ice-capped mountains and arctic landscapes, it can withstand the coldest temperatures. But, even if your terrain is more Shoreditch than Snowdonia, the parka can still be present.

Typically produced in a mid or long-length, those extra inches can be vital come winter. The exterior is as hard-wearing as they come due to a technological focus on materials that wick away rain and wind. Inside, you get a soft lining enclosing a warm but lightweight down filling.

The parka jacket's job was first to keep the wearer warm, but importantly, it also allowed movement and breathability. Keeping a close eye on the fabrics used for the interior and exterior will ensure yours will do the same.

2. Puffer or Down Jacket

puffer jacket for winter
Image from Axel Arigato

Puffer coats have become increasingly popular thanks to their lightweight yet warming design. From cold-weather specialists like Canada Goose to high-street brands such as Uniqlo, everyone has dipped their toe into this product category. So, how can you differentiate between one another? The key is to do a little research.

As the needs of our outerwear change, brands invest time and research into adapting materials. Puffer jackets might have only been seen on the slopes in the past, but now they are present in every city where the temperature drops to chilling levels. As a result, the jacket needs to be less bulky without losing its warming properties.

We recommend high-quality down-filling for this jacket style to benefit from lightweight cosiness. However, several brands use synthetic or recycled alternatives to significant effect, so do your own detective work.

Dependent on how and where you will wear a puffer jacket, guys have myriad options. Short or long versions are both available, for example. Just remember that you will get more mobility from one that finishes on the waist.

Lastly, thinner versions are an excellent choice for men seeking a multi-faceted piece. Not just adept as an outer layer on the coldest days, it is a nice mid-layer piece for extra style points. Then, later on, it can be unshackled to take the edge of a slightly chillier spring day as your headline outerwear.

3. Overcoats

smart coat for winter men

Those men who air on the side of formality in their daily outfits will be more than familiar with the overcoat. The saviour of many suits in wet and chilly conditions, the coat impeccably finishes off any tailored look. But, it is equally accomplished in more casual surroundings.

There has been an explosion in athleisure over recent years. Combined with changing views on the office uniform, us guys don't always need to be formally dressed. This has encouraged stylish gents to experiment, mixing their tailored mainstays with less casual partners. Think suits and trainers or a t-shirt and blazer. Done right, it can rejuvenate tired work wardrobes. The overcoat is no exception, worn with jeans, hoodies or sweatpants. However, the latter is a step too far for this menswear enthusiast.

The overcoat's versatility, functionality, and smart silhouette make it an evergreen choice for men. As a go-to fabric, we pick wool because it can hold 20% of its weight in water before feeling too heavy. Though, there are more lightweight options in nylon or cotton that will sacrifice the warmth that wool delivers.

Whether you need a traditional overcoat that tops off your outfit for work or a relaxed contemporary number for the weekend, menswear has overcoat options to suit every budget.

4. Peacoat

peacoat for men in winter

Peacoats are a timeless winter coat style for men, offering warmth and style in one package. This jacket features a double-breasted closure and a classic notched collar, giving it a smarter edge over some of its outerwear compatriots. That said, it is as comfortable with a pair of jeans as tailored trousers.

Like much of menswear, the peacoat has its roots in the military. Its thick wool material helped naval personnel keep warm on the deck of ships when on patrol. What is their loss is our gain with this style being a mainstay in the wardrobes of some of the best-dressed men.

As mentioned, the peacoat is versatile enough to dress up or down depending on the occasion, which is why we love it. Generally in a neutral navy or black colourway, it offers the perfect antidote to a formal shirt/tie combo or a more casual chunky knit.

No matter how you wear it, invest in a wool or wool-blend version. This fabric will keep you warmer while giving a structured silhouette due to the greater weight. Synthetic substitutes will hold their shape only a short time while being more susceptible to pulling and discolouring over time.

5. Canvas Chore Jacket

chore jacket for men

The rugged, workman aesthetic of the chore jacket makes it an excellent alternative piece for winter. Crafted from hard-wearing materials, it has protected those working outside (like construction workers) from the elements for years. Meaning it won't even flinch at your morning commute.

Where other winter jackets rely on their insulation to protect the wearer, the chore jacket has thick heavy cotton as a barrier. This staunch fabric creates a boxy, utilitarian fit that works well within a casual workwear outfit, especially if the more traditional brown or cream colours have caught your eye. Though, experiment with navy or dark green to see how this jacket works with more formal pieces to offer a minimalist overture.

With this jacket, you get added details that engage your look nicely — a positive in winter when style inspiration can be lacking. Take the large buttons, diagonal pockets or Americana motifs that can all draw the eye. This is why the chore jacket can get our nod as a jacket in our rotation on milder days.

6. Duffle Coat

The much-maligned duffle coat is notoriously overlooked when men shop for a winter coat. Think of it in a recent film or tv show, and you typically imagine a teenage protagonist (Submarine) or a famous bear from Peru (Paddington). The result is a coat that is perceived to lack the style credentials of others.

If you scan the street-style photos of Pitti or the latest fashion weeks for inspiration, you may have seen a duffle coat resurgence of late. We should note how stylish Japanese gents pair it with tailoring effortlessly. At the same time, bold colourways have made it a more contemporary pick for a casual look, which is why this military-inspired coat works so well. A long line silhouette crafted from heavy wool beats the cold-weather elements while its toggles and hood add style interest.

The result is another naval coat making its way onto the list.

Should the duffle coat in its natural beauty not be enough for you? Why not add a fur-lined hood or tartan lining to take things up a notch? Either as god intended or with the additional benefits, the heart of this jacket is a robust and warming choice for winter.

7. Shearling Jacket

Being surrounded by sumptuously soft shearling on the coldest days is hard to beat. Shearling is crafted from natural sheepskin wool and is heavy, breathable and luxuriously soft combined. A heavy hitter at beating lowering temperatures, it is not to be confused with its sherpa cousin.

The most popular shearling jackets take the warming properties of this natural material and enclose it in a mid-length, leather exterior. And this is what was incorporated by pilots to keep themselves warm in chilly cockpits during WW2.

Shearling now gets partnered with parkas, denim, bomber jackets and anything else you can think of. This breadth of choice has inevitably made it a unique proposition for winter.

We take our style notes for shearling from Sylvester Stallone (Rocky IV) or Robert Redford (Downhill Racer), more so than Del Boy. The shearling jacket should evoke a sense of masculinity, so pair it with heavy-duty boots and denim to re-enforce this.

Our final consideration for men regarding shearling jackets is their susceptibility to wetness. As a result, check the forecast to avoid getting caught in a downpour.

8. Fleece Jacket

Should your requirements for your winter coat require a little less Arctic expedition and a bit more walking holiday chic? The fleece jacket is the ideal pick. Menswear's desire for outdoor-inspired clothing is strong, clearly shown by the popularity growth of brands like Patagonia.

Like all our choices in this list, we want our winter jacket to help keep the cold at bay. A fleece jacket does that to aplomb with its shaggy sherpa exterior, repelling wind and rain as we should expect for an item technically crafted for those spending extended periods outdoors. In addition, without the bulkiness of a parka or puffer jacket, it makes transitioning from different temperatures a breeze. Perfect for those travelling to and from work.

You can skip the trek to Moutain Warehouse to get your hands on this. From streetwear to the designer world, the fleece jacket, as with the hiking boot, has become mainstream menswear.

The winter season brings with it a slew of fashion challenges for men. We have all been caught short when that inevitable cold snap rolls in. At the same time, many guys go too far the other way and wear half their wardrobe to keep warm. The answer this year could be the humble puffer jacket. Chock-full of technological advancements, from water-repellent outer layers to recycled, ultra-warm fillings. It is the Robocop of cold-weather menswear.

So, why do they look so bad?

A quick peruse of what's on offer for men can leave us a little underwhelmed. Functionality does not have to come at the expense of style; we can prove it.

Never fear; we are here to tell you that it is possible to get your hands on puffer jackets with less shiny monstrosities and more elevated classics. Our puffer jacket doesn't need to roll into a handy carry bag; it needs to showcase our personality while still being practical in the depths of winter.

Below is our list of the best men's puffer jackets to get your hands on to hit both the functional and style notes this winter.

10. Pangaia Collarless Jacket

Made from their innovative wildflower down material, it ticks a lot of the boxes we look for when considering sustainability showing 'good for the planet' doesn't have to mean boring.

13. Abercrombie Ultra Puffer

Cut in a simple, understated design; the colourway has our heads turned. Often we can retreat to black or navy during winter, while this brown puffer can change that, giving a nice update to our winter looks. For added kudos, its padding has a recycled filling, and the exterior comes with heavyweight protection against wind and rain.

14. Arket Cord Jacket

The added shirt collar gets this pick from Arket onto our list. As we expect from Arket, it comes full of minimalist Scandi charm though its lightweight make-up is what creates an incredibly versatile coat. Worn as a layer on the chillier days, it will come into its own come Spring. This interchangeable nature makes it a fine investment for any gents wardrobe.

15. Superdry Longline Jacket

Are you looking for the perfect winter coat for men to keep you warm and stylish this season? With so many different types of options available, it can be challenging to find one that fits your needs. With this guide, you can make an educated choice when purchasing a coat. It provides valuable insights into the different kinds of winter coats and what features to consider before buying one. We’ll discuss factors like insulation, breathability, water resistance, and more so that you can stay warm in style all winter long!

1. Insulation and Breathability

Insulation and breathability are two of the key features to consider when considering a winter coat for men. Insulation is vital for keeping you warm in cold temperatures, while breathability helps keep you from overheating and becoming sweaty.

When looking at insulation, look for materials such as down or synthetic fibres that trap air, which can help regulate body temperature and prevent heat loss. Down is a popular choice for winter coats due to its lightweight design and excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, but it can also be expensive. For those with more limited funds, brands like Uniqlo have a wide range of down products at affordable prices. Alternatively, synthetic fibres offer a cheaper option with similar insulating properties.

Regarding breathability, look for materials like wool or polyester that allow air to move freely while still providing some protection from the elements. Wool is a prevalent choice due to its natural ability to wick away moisture, while polyester offers additional insulation without adding extra weight. Additionally, look for coat designs with underarm vents or other ventilation features to further boost breathability and comfort levels.

When shopping for coats, it’s essential to determine what type of insulation and breathability features are best suited for your needs. Consider factors such as how cold your climate tends to be in the winter and how active you plan on being outdoors so that you can choose the best winter coat that meets those needs. No one wants to be the perspiring Michelin man on the underground, for example.

Many brands now offer information regarding the thermal rating of the coat so you can make sure it’s appropriate for where you live. Most importantly, take some time to try on different coats before purchasing so you can ensure a proper fit and maximum comfort throughout the colder season!

2. Water Resistance

Water resistance is an important factor when selecting a winter coat for men, especially if you live in Britain, where rain feels like a seasonal constant. But, importantly, aside from the rain, snow and sleet can all cause moisture to accumulate on the surface of your coat, making it uncomfortable and cold. Luckily, with modern technological advancements in waterproof fabrics and membranes, there are many choices to keep you dry.

One of the most commonly used materials for water resistance is Gore-Tex or eVent fabric. Both fabrics feature a breathable waterproof membrane that ensures moisture stays on the outside of the fabric while still allowing air to circulate inside. In addition, these fabrics are often treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish, further enhancing their water-resistant capabilities.

If you prefer a more lightweight option, synthetic fibres such as nylon or polyester are also good options for water resistance. These manmade fibres, like the others, can also be treated with waterproof coatings that help keep moisture out while still allowing some breathability, so you don’t get too hot and stuffy inside your coat.

3. Winter Style Considerations

In winter, we often take the opportunity to envelop ourselves in numerous layers to beat the cold, so much so that we can lose touch with our personalities. Yes, it is important to stay warm and dry, but that shouldn't come at the expense of style. There are enough different men's winter coats to hit the sweet spot between functionality and design.

When selecting a coat style, it’s important to consider the type of activities you plan to participate in throughout the winter months. An overcoat is an ideal choice for everyday wear as they provide an easy-to-wear look that can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. If you’re looking for something more sporty and functional for weekend trips or outdoor adventures, a parka or down jacket might be the best option since they have additional features for warmth and comfort.

In terms of colour selection, classic neutrals such as black and grey are timeless pieces that will pair well with almost any outfit. However, don’t be afraid to experiment with bolder shades or patterns if they reflect your style better! Bright colours like navy blue and burgundy can add vibrancy to your look while plaids and checks can add visual interest without being too overwhelming.

No matter what type of winter coat you choose this season, it is important that it foremost does its duty of keeping you warm. Only after that should more stylistic options come into play. Just remember that sometimes the more conservative fits and colourways can work with more in your wardrobe. And the more items it can a coat can be combined with the greater wear it will get. Therefore, making your money go further. This is especially noteworthy for something like a winter coat that can come at quite an investment in return for quality materials.

4. The Perfect Coat Fit

Finding the perfect fit in a winter coat can be tricky, especially when there are so many styles and materials on the market. However, with just a few tips, you can find a coat that fits your body shape and coordinates with your wardrobe for maximum comfort and style.

Firstly, it’s important to remember that coats come in various sizes and shapes. Your size may vary from brand to brand, so always make sure to check the measurements given before purchasing. Additionally, don’t be afraid to try on several different styles until you find the one that fits you best – trying on different sizes and shapes of coats will help narrow down what style looks best.

Regarding material selection, always opt for a breathable fabric such as wool or polyester as these allow air circulation while still providing insulation against cold temperatures. This helps ensure maximum comfort levels while keeping you warm at all times! Additionally, if you plan on engaging in more active activities such as skiing or snowboarding during the winter, choosing an insulated coat with additional features such as adjustable hoods or drawstrings is always recommended as they provide extra protection against wind chill and wet weather conditions.

Nailing the length of your winter coat for men will be crucial to looking your best. Based on your height, where a coat hem finishes can either flatter your silhouette or ruin the outfit that has been created. Generally, a coat that ends mid-thigh looks best for the average build. But, should you be a man on either the shorter or taller side of average, adjust the length. A long-length coat will swallow a shorter guy and make him look smaller than he is. At the same time, a short jacket on a tall guy draws the eye to the midriff and makes him appear elongated (so taller).

Aside from the length, keep a close eye on the shoulders, especially if you have gone for a traditional style like an overcoat or trench. Like with a suit jacket, having your shoulders line up with that of the coat as best as possible will help with the drape of your coat, making it fall in a flattering shape.

5. Where to Buy A Winter Coat

When buying quality winter outerwear for men, there are various options available depending on your needs and budget. While shopping in-store will enable you to try more options quickly, if you are confident about your size with a retailer, feel free to shop online.

After going through this guide, you should better understand the requirements for your jacket, which will help lead you to the right type of store. For example, if you have landed on a puffer-style down jacket, you might peruse a cold-weather specialist like Columbia or The North Face. Alternatively, a smarter, more traditional overcoat could be found at Suit Supply or Mr Porter.

Either way, once you have decided on a style, you can typically find the right winter coat to match your budget. Whether that be more high street or high-end, note the types of materials best suited to your needs, then use those at the jump-off point. You might be surprised at what men can get for their money if they have a greater awareness of the finer details and are not swayed by the brand name.

No matter the budget, we have pulled together some of our cold-weather coat picks to transcend whatever the season throws at us.

The Puffer Jacket

Initially, the puffer jacket will have been more visible in Arctic conditions. Though with some refinement, this jacket has become a firm favourite in cold winter rotations up and down the land. Please focus on the warming materials internally to ensure it is doing their number one job first. Then you can add a twist of colour or embellishment to make it stand out.

The Overcoat

Sometimes overlooked, the humble overcoat can be dismissed for outerwear with a little more panache. But, when done right, it is an essential piece of menswear for anyone that takes pride in their appearance. Invest in a well-made overcoat, which will see you through many winters.

The Peacoat

An iconic item in the menswear wardrobe for winter is the peacoat. Like much of menswear, its origins began in the armed forces, specifically the navy. Crafted in thick wool, it was ideal for braving the oceanic elements. These days its cropped utilitarian style is robust enough to be paired with several different pieces, from smart trousers to selvedge denim and boots.

Final Note

Finding the perfect winter coat for men can be a daunting task, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to finding something stylish and practical. Whether it's designer boutiques, high-street stores, or an online marketplace, there are many options available when shopping for winter coats, so take some time to explore them before making a purchase. Just don't forget to consider factors such as insulation, breathability, and water resistance so that your chosen item stands up against cold temperatures while still looking its best!
