As we journey on this path to sartorial enlightenment, there will always be bumps in the road. Times where our fit was off, or our outfit could be better. Nobody is perfect, but the key is acknowledging where you can improve so you don't repeat the same style mistake.

As we age, we experiment less with clothing and become more confident in knowing what works well. We have learnt to understand what fits, brands, or styles work best for us, and we can rinse and repeat always to look our best.

Unfortunately, some men still haven't quite hit the top of the mountain. Don't worry; we are here to pick you up and get you back on the right path.

This guide will give you a hit list of style mistakes to avoid. Give these a wide berth, and you'll be heading to style nirvana.

1. Trousers Are Too Long

No matter whether you wear formal trousers for work during the week or jeans at the weekend. This style rule applies to all trousers.

Unfortunately, it is common for many men to be in-between sizes for trousers bought on the high street. Not wearing the right length, though, can result in your trousers collecting over your shoelaces or jean hems fraying. Both are unsightly but easy to fix.

Visiting a dry cleaner can efficiently solve this one. They will happily pin and alter the trouser length to your desired finish. So, rather than ditching those ill-fitting trousers, spend a bit of money to get them altered and you will get a lot more use from them.

2. Formal Shirt Is Untucked

We know, as men there isn't always the occasion or the desire to be dressed to the nines in a suit and shirt.

At weekends or in the evenings a more relaxed, untucked style might be wanted. In this case, look for a shirt with less formal connotations like an Oxford shirt.

Just remember when you have decided to wear a formal shirt, it needs to be tucked in. Material from a nice shirt hanging over your waist screams a lack of effort.

3. Belt and Shoe Colour Don't Match

An easy rule to follow, you should always try to match your belt and shoe colour as closely as possible

This style mistake, though, can result from bad shopping on men's behalf. Ill-prepared purchases mean you are not buying with your wardrobe in mind. Shopping impulsively can lead men to have a new pair of shoes without a belt to match.

Why not ditch the belt? Investing in trousers with side adjusters can remove the need for a belt altogether.

Read our view on the belt or no belt with suit debate here.

4. Shoes Are Dirty

The state of a man's shoes says a lot about the person in them. It can present a lack of preparation and ignorance of the finer details. There is no point in wearing a great suit only to be let down by dirty or scuffed shoes.

Keeping your shoes in good shape by using the right products and regularly caring for them will also help them last longer. A good pair of shoes should not be a cheap investment, and looking after them properly will help make your money go further.

It's said one of the first things a woman notices about a man is his shoes, so make sure you are making a good first impression.

Read our guide on how to shine your shoes here.

5. Bottom Button Is Done-Up

Follow the rule of 'Sometimes, Always, Never' when it comes to three buttons on a suit jacket or waistcoat. For two buttons, always keep the bottom button undone.

A key element of stylish men is how they master the silhouette. Stripped back from texture or colour, the silhouette is simply how the clothes you are wearing fit and drape on your body.

When the bottom button is done-up, it can alter the piece's overall shape. Movement is restricted, the material will bunch at the waist, and there will be a visible pulling of the jacket or waistcoat towards the centre. All of these will ruin the silhouette of the outfit.

6. Wrinkled Clothes

Preparation is key with this one.

You need to take the time the night before or at the weekend to organise your wardrobe and even plan your outfits. That way, you will know that all your clothes are laundered and in top condition to be worn.

A dry cleaner can be your saviour if you are a busy man. Giving them many clothes to launder at once can set you up for the week.

We know ironing can be a bore, but it is imperative should you want to look your best. If consistently using a dry cleaner is going to be too expensive, then maybe a handheld steamer would help. They can be fairly inexpensive and mean you can speed up the ironing process by ironing directly on the hanger.

Looking after your clothes correctly will help them stay relevant in your wardrobe rotation. Following the correct care instructions will also make them last longer. So, you will look better for longer.

7. Too Many Shirt Buttons Undone

Leave a little to the imagination!

A style sin more prevalent in the summer, but nonetheless, something that should be squashed. It seems as the temperature rises, so do the number of buttons that men undo.

When you are cruising from the beach to the bar on your holiday, it might be able to get away with more buttons undone. But walking down your high street is not the place to be flashing the flesh.

If you have decided not to wear a tie with your shirt, then undo the top button, and if you feel the outfit supports it, then undo the next button.
Then stop there! Refrain from the urge to unleash your chest hair any more than that.

Obviously, the need to undo buttons can be because of the heat. So, look at the material and overall fit of the shirt as an alternative. Switching to a shirt in a linen or a linen/cotton mix, it will help you stay cooler, removing the need to undo buttons.

8. Overly Branded Clothing

Hopefully, this is something that you will grow out of. When we are younger, branded logos can be a status symbol, a way to show that we have money or taste. Our tastes refine as we mature, and we no longer chase the need to impress others.

Our appreciation of clothing should go further than the name glorified on the chest. Understanding how quality clothing looks, feels and fits is the sign of a stylish man, not the 'G' on his belt buckle.

Chasing the latest drop from a designer brand can leave you drastically out of pocket and with a lack of appreciation for what you have. The next piece will be perceived as 'better' than what you already bought, while in reality, you might never be satisfied.

Take the time to learn about brands that honour traditional craftsmanship and care about every individual product they create. These are the brands and pieces that will stay with you for years.

9. Pockets Are Bulky

Bulky pockets can be a curse of using the wrong wallet as much as it is about not having a place for our phone. Either way, we bang on about the silhouette of our outfits a lot, and bulky products are a surefire way to ruin this.

Firstly you need the correct wallet. An overflowing billfold wallet will always look clumsy and stuffed into formal trousers. Have more than one wallet, remove the crap from inside it and learn when and what type to use for each occasion.

Read our guide on buying the right wallet here.

Secondly, as technology advances, every smartphone seems to get slimmer. Payment plans are not that expensive, so there is no excuse for still using your old Nokia.

But that doesn't mean a smartphone can always fit snugly into your trousers. If it is still bulging, transfer it to a chest pocket or even stick it in your bag if it is non-essential.

10. Cheap Materials

Polyester is cheap, and brands use it to drive manufacturing costs down. You can see polyester a mile off. It gives that shine to items, especially suit jackets.

If you have a limited budget, you might be confronted with many polyester items. But, remember, for stylish men, it is about quality over quantity. Yes, you might be able to get two polyester mix suits for the cost of a wool one, but which one will look better?

As we get older, in theory, so does the disposable income we spend on clothing. Additionally, we have learnt that investing in our wardrobe will make us look better and prolong the life of our purchase.

Understanding materials and investing in versatile clothing is key to a foundational wardrobe. This means looking at how clothing, when made sustainably in simple colours, can integrate together. The more clothing that can seamlessly be paired with each other, the greater the different outfit choices available. Then you can layer bolder, individual pieces on top.

Sticking to this focus on quality instead of quantity should remove the need to buy polyester.

Having a consistent grooming routine is a key component for men to always look their best. Partnering nice clothes and accessories with a grooming regime will keep you looking in prime condition.

But, with busy personal and professional lives, it can be easy to slip into bad habits. We can overlook certain elements of our regime or put them off for a later date. The result is an outward appearance that isn't at its finest and when we can often find ourselves in close proximity to others, this could bring some unwanted attention.

By avoiding these common grooming mistakes you will ensure you look your presentable best. As we know, looking great can bring a surge in confidence and positivity and we can all do with a bit of that right about now.

1. Dirty Nails

In the mid-20th century, men used to take immaculate care of their nails, regularly attending beauty salons to have their cuticles tidied up.

Over time the insistence on men to take as much care of their nails has reduced. But, that doesn't mean we should leave them out of our grooming routine.

To stop your nails from looking dirty there is a simple tip. Keep a nail brush in the shower and give them a quick scrub every morning. This will help prevent any build-up of grim under the nails.

Going further, make sure your nails are kept to a good length by regularly trimming them.

2. Too Much Aftershave

Walking down the street, no man or woman wants to breathe in a large waft of someone's aftershave. Being a gentleman is about having a touch of class and reserve in both your clothing choices, etiquette and grooming regimes.

The best colognes will last for hours if not all day and a little goes a long way. So, apply a small amount to the chest and dab behind the ear before you put on your clothes.

Your loved one will much prefer getting a wonderful smell of your aftershave when they lean in to greet you rather than needing to open the windows when you walk through the door.

3. Overgrown Back Hair

Your barber doesn't only do a solid job on the top of your head. He attentively cleans up stray hairs from the side and back of your neck.

Men with thicker hair tend to have a greater problem with hair travelling up from their back to their neck. But, the last thing we want is to see stray hairs sticking out above the collar of your shirt.

Thankfully, it doesn't take a trip to the barber to keep on top of this. A good beard trimmer can easily be used to do the job in-between cuts.

4. Unkempt Facial Hair

Facial hair can come in a range of styles. From the tache, to stubble or even a full-on beard. Whatever you have chosen, make sure you keep on top of the length.

Your daily routine will change depending on how you like your facial hair. Men with a beard or moustache need to be cutting the edges on an almost daily basis. While going over the thicker bush of the beard with a beard trimmer will keep the hairs at a single length and make the beard look more presentable.

Those will stubble need to hit the sweet spot with their length and stick rigidly to it. As stubble grows it can easily start to look unkempt. So, remove the loose hairs that grow on the upper cheek or neck and give all the stubble a once over every other day.

5. Not Styling Your Hair

We still live in a world where a lot of opinions are based on first impressions. Not taking the time to style hair properly may evoke the image of a man that doesn't take care in his appearance. And if he doesn't take care in his appearance will he take care of his work or personal life.

By adding a few more minutes into your morning grooming routine to style your hair can make a big difference to your outward appearance.

Whether you believe in the preconceived notions of appearance being an indicator of work ethic or not. We want men to look their best from their heads to their toes every day.

6. Too Much Hair Product

The opposite of not styling can be just as detrimental on your appearance. Too much product on your hair can be a real turn-off.

A lot of this can be put down to education.

Not knowing what is the best product for your hair can lead to using too much of the wrong one to try and get the desired look.

The same could be said for the wrong haircut. You might not have the style that suits your face shape or are trying to force your hair into a particular style. Sometimes it's ok to accept defeat and go in a different direction.

Talk to your barber and discuss what they recommend for both styles and products. Remember, they are the experts.

7. Not Taking Care of Your Eyebrows

This could be overly bushy eyebrows or as far as a monobrow. We implore you to find the time to maintain good eyebrows.

Eyebrows are a very expressive feature on a man's face. We arch them when we smile and furrow them when angry. It stands to reason that they can bring a lot of attention.

To keep your eyebrows in check, it doesn't take a mammoth task. Some quick maintenance regularly can ensure they look their best.

Find out what the best eyebrow arch should be for you face shape and don't remove any further across than the bridge of your nose in-between. An eyebrow trimmer can help keep on top of, particularly bushy pairs.

8. Ignoring Nose and Ear Hair

This is so incredibly easy to keep on top of, it is unfathomable that anyone would let this get out of hand. In no way is hair protruding from your nose or ear an attractive sight.

Typically, men are taller than women. So, do you want her getting an eyeful of your nose bush every time she looks up at you?

Didn't think so.

Take a quick reconnaissance mission in the bathroom mirror and make sure you purchase an ear and nose trimmer. They are cheap but incredibly very effective.

9. Not Hydrating Your Skin At Night

At night is when your skin has the longest time to rejuvenate without interruption. Making sure you hydrate your skin with a moisturiser will help nourish the cells and promote the creation of new (fresher looking) skin cells.

What to use at night to hydrate your skin for the uninitiated can take the form of a simple moisturiser. You might already be using one in the morning, but hadn't thought about trying at night. Or, it might be a specific night cream. These are typically heavier but will get absorbed deeper into the pores.

For a deeper look at starting a skincare regime, you can read our simple 3-step plan.

10. Shaving Against The Grain

Nothing else can lead to a world of skin issues post-shave than shaving against the grain. By grain, we are talking about the natural direction of the hair.

There are fortunate men out there, that to them this won't be a problem. They are blessed with thick hair that can be shaved either way.

But, the majority of men won't fall into this camp.

Shaving against the grain can force the razor to tug out the hairs. This leads to ingrown hairs and razor bumps.

If you feel that going with the grain is not giving you a close enough shave then rethink your shaving routine and the products you are using.

11. Dandruff

There are a few different reasons that men have dandruff. Too often, we see men brush it off (literally), only for the situation to get worse. Before long, you are in the middle of a snowstorm with no end in sight.

Start by trying to get to the route of the issue. Dandruff can be because of a dry or sensitive scalp for example and this can often be easily rectified.

Firstly, cut down on the amount of product you use during and post-shower as it might be irritating the scalp. Specialist shampoos can be used on sensitive scalps to reduce flakes, while a simple anti-dandruff version might be all you need.

If the problem persists, then this might be something more medical-related, so seek advice from a GP.

12. Hiding Thinning Hair

When of the most confidence-kicking signs of ageing for men is losing their hair. Some men might see this gradually at the temple, others might see a greater loss here and on the crown. Either way, it can make a man self-conscious.

Of course, there are medical procedures that can prevent and even regrow hair in places that we are prone to losing. But, they come at a cost.

A lot of men, when they start losing their hair, they start to grow it longer to cover up or distract from the loss. The problem, this will only bring more attention to the area.

If you are suffering from hair loss then a change of haircut can ensure you go about it gracefully. A good barber can add thickness in places or recommend a style that will complement the new hairline shape.

Starting a skincare regime is easy. For those men that want to just cover the basics during their daily routine, don't read up on the latest mask, or toner. These are part of a more complex regime that we will cover in other articles. If you are a skincare novice then we recommend just following a simple three-step plan which we will outline below.

In addition, you do not need to wait until there is a skin complaint like acne, dry skin or even wrinkles to get started with a skincare regime. A daily routine is one of the best methods of maintaining healthy skin but more importantly preventing issues from arising.

Why Start a Skincare Regime?

The skin is our largest organ so we should be correctly looking after it. No matter whether we live among a rural landscape or a built-up urban one, our skin still needs protecting.

As we mentioned previously, even a simple routine can help to prevent any issues with your skin from occurring. Multiple different things can affect your skin, including:

By creating a good foundation, your skin will stay in top condition no matter what life throws at it.

In the same way, it is never too late to start looking after your skin more. Just small changes can make your skin look plumper, fresher and healthier. Small lines can start to disappear and you will see a noticeable difference when you look in the mirror.

But, not all skin is created equal.

Learn Your Skin Type

First things first, know your skin type. There are three most common skin types and each requires a different method of approach to keep them in top form.

As a side note, those with combination skins (a mixture of the above) may need to focus on a mix of products that will best combat different problem areas of the face. For example, some men might find their cheeks are dry but they get a build-up of oil on their t-zone (bridge of the nose and above the eyebrows).

Step 1 - Cleanse

Every morning and evening you should be washing your face with a good facial cleanser. A cleanser will help balance out the oil levels of your skin, washing away any excess oil that has built-up on the surface overnight or during the day. Removing this oil will prevent blocked pores which can lead to spots, blemishes and a visible shine on the surface of the skin.

Along with removing excess oils a morning face wash using a men’s cleanser made specifically for your skin type will help hydrate and brighten your skin.

When washing use lukewarm water to open up the pores and remove deep impurities. Apply face wash by rubbing in circles gently. Rinse with cool water before patting dry with a clean hand towel.

Step 2 - Exfoliate

Post-facial wash, you should be using an exfoliating scrub. An exfoliator will help to get into the pores cleaning out any dirt while removing dead skin cells from your face. The gentle scrub can also encourage new skin cells to grow to create a brighter, fresher exterior.

Most men only need to use an exfoliator 1-3 times a week and how many times you do depends on your skin type. Those men with particularly oil-prone skin should use more often than men with dry skin.

If you are someone who clean shaves, then an exfoliating scrub pre-shave can also help minimise ingrown hairs. By stimulating the hairs you are ensuring they stay further away from the skin, enabling you to get a cleaner shave and stopping them turning back in on themselves and creating ingrown hairs.

Like when using the facial wash, you want to wet your face with lukewarm water and then apply the scrub in circular motions making sure to miss the eyes. Rinse with water and pat dry.

Ensure that you don't use a facial scrub too often. Overuse can cause irritation, dry skin and even an overproduction of oil.

Step 3 - Moisturise

To hydrate your skin further, we recommend moisturising your skin twice a day. Applying a small amount of moisturiser after you have finished step 1 and 2 will help your skin stay firm and bouncy.

At the beginning of the day, a moisturiser will act as a barrier to reflect pollution, grime and even the suns rays. Before you go to bed applying a moisturiser will help skin cells to regenerate as you sleep. If you are feeling more confident, then you can always research a night cream for deeper regenerative properties and replace the evening moisturiser.

For men looking to prevent or turn back the signs of ageing, then your moisturiser will be your secret weapon. Just apply after using your wash or scrub. Ensure your skin is dry then apply a small amount of moisturiser gently massaging into the skin, avoiding the sensitive eye area.

Key Tip - Don't forget how harmful the suns rays can be on your skin. Make sure you invest in a moisturiser that has SPF qualities to boost your protection.

In conclusion, put your best face forward and with the right skin regime, you can give it some colour, freshness and reduce the signs of ageing. Investing in professional products and daily skincare routines can leave a remarkable impression on the people you meet.

Your face is the first thing people see, so make it memorable.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail and this has never been truer for men than when accounting for the unpredictable British weather. In equal measures, we can be graced with glorious sunshine and a downpour of rain in a mere few hours. Key to combating this is making sure you invest in a trusted transitional jacket.

A transitional jacket is versatile, functional and a key purchase for these mixed-up days. It will take from summer to autumn without breaking a sweat.

What To Look For In A Transitional Jacket

Gone are the balmy summer days, where thoughts of jackets are quickly dismissed. In autumn, the sun does still make an appearance, but so does rain and biting wind. Accessories like umbrellas are out in force and footwear becomes more utilitarian to add stability and incorporate rain-repellent properties. Likewise, with your outer garments, coats and jackets need to be multi-purpose, able to be relied on throughout the day no matter the weather.

Here are some key things to look for when buying a new transitional jacket.

Waterproof - Your suede jacket from summer is not going to cut it. A jacket needs to be able to wick away heavy rainwater, keeping whatever you are wearing beneath it nice and dry.

Lightweight - As quickly as the rain appears so can the sun. Flexibility in easily wearing or removing your jacket comes from it being lightweight. Too thick and it will be cumbersome to carry and continuing to wear it might leave you sweating.

Colour - Muted tones come to the fore as we move towards winter. Pack away the pastels and opt for colours that represent the changing seasons. That means deeper browns, greens, reds and even burnt orange.

Styles of Transitional Jacket

Unlike in winter where you want to be wrapped up as snug as possible when you step out the door, in autumn you have more options. The big, overbearing winter coats can be put to one side for now, because if you nail your layering, then there are plenty more autumnal jackets to choose from. For example, a denim jacket in isolation might seem too summery but layered over a knit, can be a great choice for autumn.

Here are some of the styles to consider when looking for a transitional jacket.

The Denim Jacket

As mentioned before the denim jacket, built from a robust material, can easily see you through days where there is a chill in the air.

In its simplest form, the denim jacket has rarely not been worn by the world's most stylish men since the 80s. Denim is a sturdy material that means it will protect against the wind and its simple design enables it to transcend seasons both weather and fashion-wise.

With a neat, slightly cropped silhouette it is easy to be worn over thick cable knit jumpers or a thinner merino wool alternative. Remove the jumper and partner with a statement tee for a relaxed masculine approach.

During the colder months, we recommend seeking out denim jackets that are either padded or have shearling collars. If you opt for a classic version then you can extend its use further by using it as a statement layer under an overcoat for the deeper depths of winter.

The Mac

This is the style probably most associated with transitional jackets. Crafted from waterproof nylon or waxed cotton it gives a slightly more formal take on autumnal dressing.

The sweet spot for length is a mac that finishes around halfway between waist and knee. That way the jacket remains fluid enough for either a smart or casual outfit. A mid-length end to this piece will also allow it to be easily stored in a bag or carried without it being too much fuss.

A mac is a nonchalant piece that can be easily paired with nearly every daily go-to look. Keep the colour palette fairly neutral with blues, browns or greys to allow more wardrobe versatility. But, if you want to try something a little different, seek out patterns like dogtooth or houndstooth for a gentrified take on this classic menswear item.

The Gilet

A gilet might not be your first thought when it comes to autumn jackets. But, it's warming, insulating properties make it a great pick for when the weather has only just turned.

Travelling to and from the office can be a pain due to differing temperatures in cars or on trains. A gilet is perfect at being warm enough to take the edge off the cold but won't swelter you when you get into a warmer environment.

Like with the denim jacket when we layer core pieces correctly there is the ability to get much more use out of the products we buy. The gilet in its design (with no arms) ensures layering under a suit jacket or an overcoat is a cinch.

The Bomber Jacket

A style that after having a resurgence a few years back, doesn't look like going anywhere. The bomber jackets popularity is down to its ability to transcend smart and casual looks with aplomb.

If you want it to last longer then we recommend versions with an additional shearling collar for more warmth. A nod to its heritage, the collars were introduced to keep the pilots wearing them warmer in their cold cockpits. Like with lots of military-inspired clothing though, it has become a notable option for stylish men.

Looking to wear it casual? Then partner with denim or chinos and your favourite trainers. For smarter looks, then tailored trousers and a formal shirt are the way forward. Just remember to make the jacket the focus, so use a clean minimalist foundation for the top and bottoms.

The Field Jacket

Starting off as uniform for the US military way back in 1965. Over the past 50 years, the field jacket has entered mainstream menswear and hasn't looked back. Despite variant colours, materials and subtle design tweaks, overall the jacket still stays true to the original M-65 design.

Like most military garments, the field jacket has functionality at its core. First and foremost, men relied on it to be able to keep them dry from downpours in the Vietnam jungle. But, its considered design gave them pockets for carrying supplies as well as being lightweight enough to be stored in backpacks if required.

Adept at being worn with autumnal layering pieces it will also look great worn simply with chinos and a Breton tee. From the urban landscape to rolling hills, the field jacket will be a faithful companion for any stylish gent.

Now we are spending longer in our homes, slippers have become an everyday essential for men. If you live in a place with wooden floors especially, you will be familiar with that sharp pang of cold first thing in the morning. It's enough to send you running back under the covers. Now, imagine sliding your foot into the warm embrace of a sheepskin-lined slipper as you softly walk to the kitchen.

Slippers might seem like the accessory of choice for men over 65. But, in the current climate of 'new normal', everyday style doesn't have to take a backseat. Why would we not want to experience high-level comfort when living and even working from our abodes without sacrificing looking good.

So, find out everything you need about choosing the cosiest slipper for you and your living-come-working space. With many variations such as the moccasin or the mule, the humble slipper is the 2022 footwear item you never knew you needed.

Different Styles of Slipper

Like with all menswear pieces there have always been iterations to classic items. As different brands or individuals input their creative flair and technical knowledge, new variations are born. Here are our picks of the key styles to look out for.

The Mule

The mule is a term more readily associated with women's footwear. It is your usual slipper design but there is no back to the shoe. They are perfect for kicking on and off, as the foot slides easily in and out. So, good for wearing from one room to another, possibly post-shower. But, not our recommended choice for working from home in.

The Moccasin

This is the slipper design we are most familiar with. Your foot stays enveloped in a hug of warmth. This is next-level comfort, not your grandad's daily kickabouts. The inside is lined with super-soft wool or sheepskin that will wick away moisture and leave your foot toasty and dry.

The Bootie

For men looking to take the warmth to extreme levels, then the bootie will give added insulation up to the ankle. These are definitely no to be worn outside the house like an extra from TOWIE. This is weekend-style for loafing on the sofa.

The Dress Slipper

The dress slipper is typically crafted from velvet and its adoption by the stylish elite dates back to Prince Albert. Now a familiar sight at black-tie events it can also be worn in less-formal environments. That means they are perfect for a devilishly smart take on the traditional slipper.
